Cape Byron, New South Wales, Australia April 2006
On the Brisbane trip to Australia, one of the highlights of that journey was to be Byron Bay. Since we lived in Indonesia and then Singapore, we had many Aussie friends over the years and they all waxed lyrical about Byron Bay as some artsy, bohemian community with great beaches. Expectations were running high.... (danger, Will Robinson!)
The town of Byron Bay was singularly unremarkable. We didn't even take any photos. I remember we both thought "this is it?" The drive there via several stunning national parks far eclipsed the destination! We had a look around, probably ate something, and then wandered off to Cape Byron to check it out. The cape is a little peninsula sticking into the Tasman Sea marking the easternmost point of the Australian mainland. There is a cute little lighthouse and some sweeping views of the beaches nearby (as pictured). We didn't linger at all. It might have been one of the biggest let downs of all the places we visited in Australia. No wonder native daughter Olivia Newton-John left!
We headed north to the Gold Coast and hoped for better luck.
