Diamond Jubilee: Fountain Square, Indianapolis

July 2021
Indianapolis is home to several "hip" neighborhoods. AQ and I wanted to visit at least one (and get some good coffee) before we moved on. The closest to downtown is Fountain Square.
Once home to farmland in Indianapolis’ early days, the district grew to a bustling commercial district at the turn of the 20th century. Following revitalization in the 1990s and 2000s, Fountain Square has grown into an energetic and unique destination. Its sister neighborhood, Fletcher Place, can be found just north of Virginia Avenue over the interstate bridge. The combined neighborhoods are home to over 12,000 residents.
We found the neighborhood easily, but were disappointed that, because it was a holiday, many things were closed. We had a good (but short) walkabout and luckily found some decent coffee at Bovaconti Coffee Shop (luckily open). I liked Fountain Square, but the holiday (and COVID?) rendered it dead. The area is also not very "urban dense", which added to a feeling of "emptiness". Part of me thought I would like living there and part of me wondered if it ever could ever appear as active as cities farther east? Indianapolis is very spread out and the attraction of being urban is.... people.
We were happy to have seen at least one of Indy's trendy neighborhoods. In the final analysis, we both liked it. I wished we had time to visit more.
One stop remained - the race track.
