The Bear and the Strawberry Tree. July 2014

The Puerta del Sol (English: "Gate of the Sun") is a public square in Madrid, one of the best known and busiest places in the city. This is the centre (Km 0) of the radial network of Spanish roads. The square also contains the famous clock whose bells mark the traditional eating of the Twelve Grapes and the beginning of a new year. The New Year's celebration has been broadcast live since 31 December 1962 on major radio and television networks including Atresmedia and RTVE.

On that first visit to Madrid with AFVdR, the very first stop was Puerta del Sol. Luckily, we were staying nearby and could easily walk there. The place is like Trafalgar Square in London or Times Square in New York City - the recognized center. Like any such place, it felt very touristy and was crowded with both visitors and locals. I thought it a very logical starting point to see Madrid.

Perhaps I felt the same way I do about all such places - a necessary stop, but not a place to tarry. A made sure I noted the statue of the bear - the symbol of Madrid. It looks wildly out of place, but it is also the necessary "photo op". I have to admit - I was not that impressed compared to all else I experienced as that first visit to Spain unfolded. On reflection, I don't criticize A's choice of where to start - it made total sense. I would recommend others make sure to pay a visit, too. Unfortunately, it is more of a been there, done that place.

Spain's kilometer zero marker - check.
